Since Tom Ridenour created the ATG Reed Finishing System almost 20 years ago it has become the reed finishing/adjustment tool of choice for professionals the world over. The problem is that when Tom made the system he did so primarily with students in mind as they tend to be completely at the mercy of whatever comes out of the box. If they reed they buy from their local store or online is poorly balanced they typically can't afford to go get a new box of reeds or toss out 70 or 80% of the reeds they purchased because they play so poorly. Typically students end up compensating for their unbalanced reed(s) and in the process they typically develop poor playing mechanics. We know of some schools that have their middle and high school clarinetists using the ATG system and it's made a world of difference.
The price of the full ATG system is .95. While this represents an incredible value we understand the financial realities that many families face. To help make having excellent reeds as affordable as possible for several years now we've been offering the ATG Student Kit, which includes the glass finishing surface, sanding block, four pieces of abrasive, and a rubber band to hold the abrasive on to the sanding block for .95. The idea of the student kit is that a band director, private teacher, or an older more experienced player who has the full system will use the knowledge found in the DVD and booklet that comes with the full system to explain the process of testing reeds and adjustment them using the basic tools included with the Student Kit.
This version of the ATG system includes the last, we have roughly 100 left, of the original finishing surface we used.
